When I use a photo, do I have to send an example of what I did or a message to the photographer?

The short answer is no, but we do recommend that you do send a sample if you're able. Photographers put a lot of time into creating photos and find examples of real-world uses of their work very encouraging. Sending a photographer a copy of your project is a small gesture that can have huge benefits.
